pcnfsd is a daemon running on an NFS Server to implement:

   -  user authentification
   -  print spooling

for PC-NFS (or equivalent products, e.g. FTP's INTERDRIVE). The source code for
pcnfsd  is normally distributed via the PC-product or can be FTP'ed over the net.
If you have a BSD-like network interface, porting should be trivial.

As there are some version of the PCNFSD code on the net (look for Version 2) which
have been posted by SUN Microsystems, I guess that the code is freely distributable.

        Well, I think that the problem with bad directories (a bug in the dirs
handling routines) has been corrected in 0.98pl6.  If you can, upgrade to a
newer version of the Linux kernel or get the file extfs.p6.Z which is available
by ftp on ftp-masi.ibp.fr and on tsx-11.mit.edu in the directory
/pub/linux/ALPHA/extfs.  Then, apply the patch to the kernel sources, rebuild
a kernel and boot from it.  Note that the latest release of efsck (from version
10.1) are able to correct bad directory entries.

        mkefs now uses a reserved inode (inode #2) to store the bad blocks.
This inode does not appear in the filesystem tree any more because it was
leading to problems (root could delete the .badblocks file or save it during
a backup).

        So, even if you don't see a .badblocks file with ls, don't worry.  The
bad blocks are recorded and won't be use in the fs.

In Xconfig uncomment Emulate 3 button (or whatever).
If your mouse works at all you have the major/minor battle won.

Unfortunately, I have to call it ALPHA, too. Last week I switched to extfs
with 89pl5 and found lots of errors. Sometimes efsck reports an error
while counting the inodes (one was missing), and after a system hang-up
( with X ) even efsck wasn't able to repair the file system again.

I use MINIX fs again and wait until extfs is reported stable.

I've compiled the new C-Kermit 5A(188) with and without networking
and beamed both binaries up to sunsite.  But I noticed when it ran
my .kermrc that there is no hardware RTS/CTS flow control in this
version (POSIX doesn't define flow control; not all unices support
it).

Is this a problem for sending files at higher speeds, especially
when running V.42 LAP-M error correction?  I would think RTS/CTS
would be essential.  Or maybe Linux's serial drivers always use it?
If it's necessary and a fix is easy, I'd be happy to recompile and
beam up new binaries.

the solution, as Marlet already points out in the README for viewer!!, is to
make a simple patch to the epoch source:
  in buffer.h, next to last line, change the default for is_meta_char from

and recompile..dont use the ctl-arrow kludge.
 i will post a patched epoch-4.2 binary to tsx-11 (dir /pub/linux/packages/TeX)

Hi,  I am just getting news running on my system SLS version 0.98pl1 and I
have encountered a small problem.  If for some reason uucico is unable to
connect properly with the system it is contacting, say it fails in the logon
script, it terminates okay but fails to hang up the modem.  This can be
an expensive error.  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

I think you'll find that kermit is changing the baud rate on the
serial port into which your mouse is plugged in to.  kermit does this
even if you use the command line switch to indicate the proper
serial port for kermit.  I have not investigated whether there
is a deeper configuration file that can control this.

Try this, assuming your mouse is attached to ttys1

% stty < /dev/ttys1
% kermit
...
^Z
% stty < /dev/ttys1  # just to see what the story is
% stty 1200 < /dev/ttys1 # assuming your mouse runs at 1200

Yes!  Look in tsx-11.mit.edu:/pub/linux/ALPHA/NFS directory.  There is a file
called sunrpclib.tar.Z I believe (or something like that).  That is what you
want.

I'm interested in getting linux, but is there another way to
distribute large software packages than CD?

Since I (and many other home users) don't have a CD player or a tape
backup machine, why not distribute the stuff on a format that I can
use more than once.

Can you provide the distribution on some standard tape format?
And what  about  other formats that might be useful for distribution
AND backup such as that new sony mini cd that's read/writable?

Please forgive my question if the answer is obvious, but I've looked
through the docs I have and can't seem to find any info on what to do with
the Fix files in the SLS/fixes directory on tsx-11 (ZAFIX.TAZ ...).  I
just installed linux this last weekend, so I'm sure I have the latest
version of the SLS release (and it sure was easy to install, I must say),
so should I be trying to use these fix files, or are they for people with
previous SLS releases?

I haven't seen such support in Linux.. But has anybody even seen
the specifications of a Stacker drive-file? I doubt they've been
published, and just guessing the format could prove a bit tricky...

What I know about Stacker, all the stuff on a stacked drive is
actually in a single file on an MSDOS filesystem, so obviously
one should first mount the msdos-fs and then mount the stacker-file
on that fs into some directory. I wonder if this is possible on
Linux; can mount use other than UNIX block-specials as devices
to mount from.

Does Linux poll serial ports (i.e. can I use COM2 and COM4 at the same time
if they are both on IRQ 3). I have looked at the serial code but it just
gets me dizzy. And I do not see any mention of polling (which is what I
always thought was the correct phrase). But is Linux suppose to do this?
And if so PLEASE tell me that there is a trick to enabling it because
nothing I've tried works.

I had this problem too; also, top claimed that I always had 100% free core- none
of my processes  were using any memory!  Recompiling ps and top and then doing a
ps -U fixed it.

By the way, I am still using the ps package for 0.97 pl6; I haven't replaced it
yet 'cause it still seems to work. It worked fine under 0.98 and now with 0.99.

Problems with Ghostscript 2.5.2 to get an outputfile for a printer.

I have compiled Ghostscript for X11 and laserjet device, but I get no output from Ghostscript for the printer.

1. If I try to print with the command
  gs -sDEVICE=laserjet -r300 <filename>
ghostscript says initializing loading Font ... and so on. After that only the prompt is on the screen and nothing happens (the man-pages say the output will go to the scratch file, but I don't know what it means).

2. If I try the command
  gs -sDEVICE=laserjet -r300 -sOutputFile=<Outfile> <filename>
no outputfile <Outfile> is created and the same happens like the first case.

If I add a -- before the <filename> ghostscript does the same but no ghostscript prompt appears.

The output from linux should be ok, because the shellscript gslp makes an output to the outputfile when I add the switch -sOutputFile=<Outfile>. Without the switch it happens the same like the first case.

I get with the command
  gs -sDEVICE=laserjet -r300 -sOutputFile=<Outfile> -- gslp.ps <filename>
an outputfile with postscriptcode. I can print this file on the printer but it is only the postscriptcode which is very interesting but not enough (I think the output is ok with this script).

My configuration is
  Linux 98 patchlevel 1 (from SLS Package)
  486-50 SLS Board
  ATBUS Controller with Seagate ST1144 Harddrive
  Epson EPL 4100 Laserprinter (HP-Laserjet II compatible)

I had the same problem.  What ended up happening, is that kermit when it
kicks up, defaults to /dev/ttys1.  Sooooo, if that is where you hang your
mouse, down it goes.  The solution is to prempt this defaulting.  This is
accomplished by adding the line:
set line /dev/<serial port>
to your .kermrc file in your home directory. where <serial port> is *any*
other port than the one you hang your mouse off of.  (the obvious thing is to
set it to the port you hang your modem off of).  In any case, good luck.
